Why bring a Child into this World?

  • Since the end of the Second World War in 1945 there have been some 250 major wars in which over 50 million people have been killed. Many of these wars are fought over dwindling natural resources.
  • 780 million people lack access to clean drinking water and 3.4 million people die due to water-borne diseases each year.
  • Almost half the world — over three billion people — live on less than $2.50 a day
  • An estimated 2.5 billion people lack access to improved sanitation
  • There is more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere today than at any point in the last 800,000 years.
  • Most of the landfill sites of the world will run out of room within next 10 years.

Seriously! Why bring a child into this world? As parents or would be parents we have asked this question

at one point or the other. But there is an answer

Because there has never been a better time to create a brighter future for our children.

As parents we are always worried about child’s future. Not just what they will grow up to be or what kind of life they will create but we also worry about what kind of world will they be living in, the air they will breathe, the quality of food they will eat and the cleanliness of the water they will drink.

But worrying is not enough, it is the right time to take steps which will ensure that even if we don’t get to see it, our kids, grand kids and great grand kids inherit a better earth. An earth which is beautiful, bountiful, has clean water and healthy food for everyone, access to hygiene for everyone and people live a sustainable and green lifestyle.

Unilever’s Project Sunlight is a new initiative which aims to motivate millions of people to adopt a sustainable lifestyle. The project launches today on Universal children’s day and hopes to inspire people worldwide, and in particular parents, encouraging them to join the growing community of global citizens who want to make the world a brighter place for their children and future generations.

To mark the launch of Project Sunlight, Unilever will be helping 2 million children by providing school meals through the World Food Program; clean, safe drinking water through Save the Children; and improved hygiene through UNICEF.
