5 Ways to Declutter Your Mind This Diwali

I have been crusading through Diwali cleaning and decluttering like a Ninja. But trying to manage a toddler, a fledgling business, a blog and preparing for Diwali can be a bit overwhelming.

On a whim I decided to ask my readers about which part of their house they start decluttering during Diwali. While a lot of people were like me and started their decluttering with Kitchen, others named their closets, puja room, book shelves etc for starting their mission declutter.

But an answer that struck me a lot and has been on my mind ever since was by Shilpi Singh, a life coach and a must-follow person on twitter.

Don’t you agree 100% with Shilpi’s thought? If we are given the option of decluttering just one space during Diwali, I think it should definitely be our minds.

As a mom, a wife, a homemaker, a business owner, a blogger plus a million other roles that I play every day, I feel like I am juggling a lot of balls and sometimes I have dropped quite a few of them. I am sure many of you handle way more things than me and may be feel just as overwhelmed.

So I decided to write about 5 ways that you can declutter your mind and soul this Diwali. Because prosperity begins in your mind and if your mind and soul are wealthy and clear, your life will be too.

5 Ways to Declutter Your Mind This Diwali

Meditate

No, you don’t have to meditate like a guru or go into a trance or achieve Nirvana. You don’t even need an ideal place to meditate. Meditation simply means focusing on your inner self. Detaching yourself from the chaos of the world and listening to your self.

I have started meditating recently and created a tiny meditation corner (it really is tiny, it is just one shelf out of my tall bookcase) and kept a few things that make me feel zen.

Every morning I get up and meditate for some time. There is no right or wrong way to do it but it helps if you have quiet all around you and you just focus on your soul for a while. Forgive others and yourself during this time, accept your limitations and banish guilt, turn your negative thoughts into positives or anything else that makes you feel calm.

Some days it is for half an hour but other days it is just for 15 mins or even 5 mins. This simple start to my day keeps me calmer and saner through out the day.

 Write It Down

Have you ever felt like you have a million things in your mind but you are always forgetting them? WRITE THEM DOWN.

I have around 10 notebooks in various parts of my house stashed away just for me to write away any ideas, thoughts or notes that keep popping up! My father has written a daily journal for as long as I remember and I think he has the most organized mind ever because of that one ritual.

You don’t need to write eloquently or to impress any one else. Just getting your thoughts, ideas, to-dos on paper will give you so much clarity and your thought process will be decluttered as well.

Sleep Like a Baby

Early to bed and early to rise, makes a person healthy, wealthy and wise.

For the past many, many years I used to think of this as a mere saying. My favorite retort to it was that “I can stay up until 4 a.m just don’t ask me to wake up at 4 a.m”. I was a typical night owl.

But with a toddler and so many things to do, I found that sleeping at 1 a.m and waking up at 7 a.m to get my kid ready for the school wasn’t the ideal situation. I would be tired through out the day, would be irritable and at the same time hardly anything ever got done.

Ever since I embraced waking up early,I found that it not only made me more productive, I got things on my to-do list done before any one else in the house was up and I was ready to face the day. Now, I don’t mean to say that you MUST get up early but you must try to get enough sleep because your body and your mind need their downtime.

Go Slow

Multi-tasking is the buzz word nowadays. Every person I know takes pride in being a multi-tasker. But here’s a thought- why can’t you be a single tasker! Do one single task at a time but do an awesome job of it.

If you spread yourself too thin, sooner or later you won’t be able to give your best to anything

Instead focus on important things in life and delegate, defer or deny other, not-so-important things.

So if you are playing kitchen with your daughter, just focus on that and have fun in that moment completely instead of thinking about all the emails you need to respond to, the dinner that needs to be done or that friend you haven’t caught up with yet.

Declutter your surroundings

Sometimes all the exercises in the world will not bring you as much peace as decluttering your closet. Our physical surroundings affect our minds for sure. Clearing and cleaning of physical space will create uninterrupted flow of energy which will charge up your mind as well.

If you have half an hour to spare keep it for decluttering just one space per day. Use this time to sort out your thoughts, listen to some soothing music or just be at peace. This time will not just give you an organized space at the end but also an organized mind.
